And yet it moves: Paradoxically moving linkages in kinematics

چکیده

The possible configurations of a mechanical linkage correspond to the solutions system algebraic equations. We can estimate dimension solution set by counting free parameters and equational constraints. But this does not always give correct answer: sometimes moves although it should not. In paper, we mathematical explanations for unexpected mobility.

Prostate cancer screening: and yet it moves!

The debate of prostate cancer (PCa) screening has been shaped over decades. There is a plethora of articles in the literature supporting as well as declining prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. Does screening decrease PCa mortality? With the long-term results of the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate (ERSPC) the answer is clearly YES. It moves! However, in medicine there...

"Eppur si muove" (Yet it moves).

I n the 17th century, the problem of the relative movement of the Earth with respect to the sun was an issue of central importance, and in fact, the man who has been considered responsible for the birth of modern science was committed to house arrest for defending the heliocentric hypothesis. Four centuries after the (never-confirmed) legend of Galileo Galilei’s rebellious phrase, a problem of ...

Qualitative Kinematics of Linkages

An important aspect of qualitative spatial reasoning is understanding mechanisms . This paper presents a qualitative analysis of motion for mechanical linkages . In particular, we describe how to analyze the behavior of a mechanism which has a movable axis . The basic idea of our approach is to represent relative motions of the link in terms of quadrants (qualitatively representing the directio...

“ And yet it moves ” or why grammar overrides frequency : a reply to Kempen and Harbusch

We show that Kempen and Harbusch’s (Cognition (2003) this issue) arguments against our claims cannot be upheld. On the one hand, their alternative account of our data that is based on the availability of constructions with object-experiencer verbs is not compatible with the literature on the processing of these types of sentences in German. Moreover, their allegation that we failed to conduct a...
